This black Subaru WRX STI will be the next race car fireball to be featured in Hoonigan’s Gymkhana video series. It’s being billed by Subaru as the “wildest WRX STI ever,” and we’re not going to contradict that claim. Just look at it.
The raw carbon body looks like a real cheese grater. You could throw a whole chicken at the front fender as it drives by and end up with a shredded BBQ. The flame-spitting exhaust on the hood even cools the bird nicely as it passes over the front of the car. And no, we don’t see any flames in the pictures here, but Subaru promises it will produce fire. The crazy aero was apparently developed in a wind tunnel. And if you haven’t guessed by now, this car is designed without any limitations for anything. It doesn’t compete, so everything is optimized for the best possible performance.
It’s packing a custom boxer engine, but Subaru isn’t giving us numbers just yet. We can guarantee it will be insanely powerful, as the extra smoky photos suggest. The car also has long-travel suspension and a ‘race-ready interior’.
Travis Pastrana will be behind the wheel in this 2020 Gymkhana series, which is promised to be even bigger and better than the Gymkhana videos before it. Pastrana’s history of rally and rallycross riding should help him provide the same level of entertainment Ken Block did in Subarus in the past.
“This STD is incredible!” Travis Pastrana, said. “We have never had the opportunity to do this, to build a car without limitations. Engine, suspension, aerodynamics – everything is limitless, clean slate. It’s insanely fast, easy to drive and sideways and it was perfect out of the box during testing. Gymkhana is a new challenge for me, but I want to raise the bar, and this is the car to do it. “
The car itself is a collaboration between Subaru and partner Vermont SportsCar. It started as a production STI, but it doesn’t look like it now. We hope to learn more about the car soon – new Gymkhana videos cannot come soon enough.
