Honda has announced a limited edition package that makes the Civic Type R crate engine easier to install. Called the Controls package, it includes a wire harness, fuse box, throttle pedal and ECU programmed by Honda Performance Development.
Honda began offering its Civic Type R K20C1 crate engine in the US in 2017, but it only came as the long block, alternator, turbo, and starter. As anyone who has done an engine change knows, this is just the beginning. In order for the engine to work with the host car, you need to connect systems such as fuel injection, ignition and sensors to the electronic brain of the vehicle, the ECU.
The Controls package makes the 306 horsepower, 295 lb-ft inline-four much easier to install. You will still need to buy some items yourself, such as engine mounts, intercooler pipes and turbo rear exhaust, fuel supply and cooling system. But you no longer need to solder your own wires or find an aftermarket solution.
In the past, the Civic Type R crate engine was only available if you were a racing team or a member of Honda’s Racing Line program. However, Honda has now opened the program to everyone, as with the Civic Type R TC racing car we recently tested. Honda is quick to point out, however, that the engine is for use in track settings only and not street legal.
The Controls package is sold only with a new engine, which costs $ 9,000 for the whole complexity (the standalone engine costs $ 6,790.00). Only 93 control packs will be created, so if you want a K20C1 for your track weapon, it’s best to act quickly when the system goes on sale on May 1, 2021.
